Ownable software

Ownable software, not SaaS.

Updated 5 November 2026 · prices checked this month

Short answer: Ownable software is business software you buy once and own outright: the full source code, your data in your own database, your brand on the app, installed by an AI coding assistant instead of a vendor. It is the alternative to SaaS. With SaaS you rent the software every month; with ownable software you buy an asset once.

Why this category exists now

For twenty years, buying source code was a bad deal for most companies. You needed a team of developers to install it, configure it and keep it running, so renting software as a service (SaaS) won: it was easy, even if you paid for it every month, for every user, forever.

AI coding assistants changed that. Claude Code and Codex can read a codebase, follow a setup guide written for them, create the database, apply the security rules, brand the app and run the tests, in hours rather than months. The convenience gap that made SaaS the default has closed. The cost gap has not. Ownable software is what you get when source code is packaged to be installed by an AI.

The five tests of ownable software

  1. You get the source code, not a login. The whole system, front end and back end, is yours to read and change.
  2. Your data lives in your own account. The database sits in a cloud account you control, not in the vendor's.
  3. One price, no meter. No per-user or per-month fee. Hiring rep number 51 costs nothing.
  4. It installs from a guide written for AI. Setup instructions are written for an AI coding assistant, so you don't need a development team.
  5. It ships under your name. The apps carry your brand and are published from your own app store accounts.

If a product fails any of these, it is SaaS, a template or a code dump, not ownable software.

When SaaS is still the better choice

For everyone else, and especially for companies with large field teams, renting software per head is paying for convenience that no longer needs to be bought.

An example: Beatplan.app

Beatplan.app is ownable software for field sales teams: beat plans, GPS-verified dealer and farmer visits, dealer orders, cash/cheque/bank collections with slip photos, offline sync, a director dashboard and company-car management. It passes all five tests: full source code, your own Supabase database, US$2,900 once, a setup guide for Claude Code or Codex, and apps published under your company name. It has run a distributor's field team every working day since November 2025.

See exactly what it does and doesn't do, or what it costs against SaaS at your team size.

Beatplan.app is an independent product. It is not Beatplan by MRX Consulting (beatplan.io), not the "BeatPlan" app by DIAL ERP and not BeatRoute; it is not affiliated with any of them.

Questions

What is ownable software?

Ownable software is business software you buy once and own outright: the full source code, your data in your own database, your brand on the app, installed by an AI coding assistant such as Claude Code or Codex instead of by the vendor. It is an alternative to SaaS subscriptions.

How is ownable software different from SaaS?

SaaS is rented per user per month and runs on the vendor's servers. Ownable software is paid for once, runs in your own cloud account, can be changed freely and carries your brand. The trade-off is that there is no vendor helpdesk; setup and fixes are done with documentation and an AI assistant.

Is ownable software the same as open source?

No. Open source is free to use under an open licence and usually needs developers to turn it into a product. Ownable software is a finished commercial product with a paid licence, packaged so an AI assistant can install it.

Why is ownable software possible now?

AI coding assistants can now read a codebase and follow a setup guide to create the database, configure and brand the app and run its tests. That removes the developer team that buying source code used to require.

Is Beatplan.app SaaS?

No. Beatplan.app is ownable software: a field sales app sold as full source code for a one-time US$2,900, hosted on the buyer's own Supabase account and published under the buyer's own brand.
